FIXIE/TRACK/SINGLE SPEED

Back to basics the theme is with minimum gear on your bike. Its not new..... that's how it all started after the Penny Farthing, Today the rediscovery of a fixed single gear has many followers. The look of a fixie bike displays the simplicity of one of the great inventions ever ...the bicycle.

Fixed gear bikes come in many interpretations, but the best has to be  a steel bike with "normal" sized tubing two wheels, a single transmission drive, saddle and handle bars, and for those who wish to stop more in a hurry a single brake.

Like anything there are variations to the theme and a Fixie offers that with bonus'es.

  • Cro-moly butted tubing names like Reynolds, Columbus, Tange, Easton and 4130 with newcomers adding to the list. Steel is real and is well on the comeback trail with famous steel tube makers re- introducing models, many re-formulated to challenge carbon.
  • Nothing has the look of steel with its understated tube sizes and opportunity to specify those lines of investment cast lugs, or more simply Tig welding with its stitched joins or the smooth flawless butt brazed finish.
  • Components are re-appearing with the Japanese re- establising their famous range of product.... its not new they simply didn't stop turning out those crafted products of handlebars and stems, those beautifully made pedals with bearings as smooth as silk, cranksets with finishes that make it a shame to bolt onto your bike, chains that will ensure ....for the boys wont end up with a squeaky voice when attacking a sharp hillclimb. Ah to rest your rear end on a saddle that offer an range of shapes and colours, and where the meets the rubber meets the road ... tyres that are still made in the same factory that supplied our tyres when making BMX in 1979, this company belongs to one of the largest corporates in JAPAN. Keirin track racing  one of the biggest sports in Japan has ensured standards are kept high with their NJS aprroval system. Names like:

Sugino- Nitto- MKS- Kashimax-Izumi -Panaracer-Dia Compe and Tange are some names never forgotten.....we certainly haven't since 1979 we started with them and many we continue today.

There also some imitations now being made, they are pretty good, offering very good choices.

Frame building is back and arent we pleased about that for we also never stopped, we now have partnered artisans to work with and yes we can custom build.

Offshoots of single speed in MTB and track never stopped share much of the technology, Racing BMX which we were there at the start with the NZ famous PANTHA brand is alive and well with the next generation involved.

Names Like Sturmey Archer well over 100 years old is pumping with product re- introduced from the past. Fixed wheel 3 speed hubs, and now the duomatic 2 speed hub freewheel or coaster brake, with matching cranks and hubs to suit. Oh Brooks saddles....they haven't changed and are still the most confortable.
