Road & Track Tubulars

Tubulars are recognised as the traditional high performance tyre.

Tubulars for those new to high performance cycling are a one-piece tyre and tube with the tube seperately sewn inside an outer casing. These are glued to a special tubular rim lighter than a clincher rim of similar size.

There are several levels of tubulars:

  • Training (Practice) tyre heavier casing ,less thread count some with vulcanised tread applied these weigh about 310 to 270 grms.Others with cured applied tread...a better option.
  • Training with a protection underlay (Practice Dual Tourgard) With cured tread weigh from 300 grams
  • Racing with 290 TPI (threads per inch) lightweight fast with cold cured tread some with puncture protection kevlar underlay (Extreme Jet) dual compound tread suitable also for track racing as well as road events...as used by professional teams.

Tubulars must have pre- treatment of rims ( roughened) to apply several layers of tubular glue (Pana Cement), also a coating on the base tape of the tubular.

Once fitted these will take pressures up to 700kpa to 1000kpa (100psi to 170psi) depending on road surface and temperatures.

Riding these will sound different and perform above any clincher tyre... the tubular effectively becomes part of the rim.
